a Miyazaki i love: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

This is a very 80’s, very Japanese trailer.

I rewatched this the other night. Still really great. And early, too, for a Miyazaki film–1984. That’s before Studio Ghibli was made.

Treats its women characters pretty well, too (that is to say, doesn’t make a big deal of them being important, capable, and in charge, without oversexualizing them (yes Nausicaa is wearing pants, they just happen to be close to the color of her skin)). And the Disney dub has some real star power: Alison Lohman, Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, Mark Hamill, Shia LaBeouf, for example.

Oh, and important fun fact: in a scene late in the movie, Hideaki Anno, basically lead creator of the Evangelion series, was the animator of a massive organic war machine that is awakened to defend against giant invading creatures. Sound familiar?
